Ocumicho is a small town in Michoacán where the tradition of the «Diablitos» originated. The women of the town of Ocumicho were the ones in charge of crafting pottery; the figures were usually of animals that often lacked artistic value. So, where do the Diablitos de Ocumicho come from? There are different theories about the origin of these fantastic little figures, but most agree on one version attributing their invention to Marcelino Vicente, a young man from that locality. It seems that in the 1960s, he had an encounter with the devil, and it was after this event that he began to craft and sell these figurines, which quickly became popular both in the region of Michoacán and beyond. As Marcelino’s «diablitos» became more famous, the people of the town took advantage of this boom to start creating their own diablitos, and this is how Ocumicho became known as «the town of the devil.» The premature and mysterious death of the artist turned him into a legend, which further fueled the production of these fantastic figures.

Ocumicho es una pequeña localidad de Michoacán donde se originó la tradición de los Diablitos. Las mujeres del pueblo de Ocumicho eran quienes se encargaban de la elaboración de la artesanía en barro, las figuras solían ser de animales que en muchos casos carecían de valor artístico. Entonces, ¿De dónde provienen los Diablitos de Ocumicho? existen diferentes teorías en torno al origen de estas fantásticas figuritas, pero la mayoría coinciden en una versión y atribuyen su invención a Marcelino Vicente, un joven de dicha localidad,  que al parecer, en la década de los sesenta tuvo un encuentro con el demonio y fue tras este suceso cuando comenzó a elaborar y comercializar estas figuritas que se hicieron rápidamente populares, tanto en la región de Michoacán como fuera de esta. A medida que los diablitos de Marcelino se hacían más famosos la gente del pueblo aprovechaba este auge para iniciarse en la creación de diablitos y así fue como se acabó conociendo a Ocumicho como “el pueblo del diablo”.

La prematura y misteriosa muerte del artista lo llevó a convertirse en una leyenda, lo que favoreció la producción de estas figuras fantásticas .
